JAMES KANE 4173
Here in church Street in the 1930's horses are in the decline although one can be seen at the top of the hill. Now the car parked on the right belongs to the man on the left his name is Mr. Davis who originally owned the store they are beside and the man on the right is James Kane who bought the Store/Shop from Mr Davis. When James was a young man he lost a leg after getting it cut, playing street Soccer, and then washing it in the river, where it got infected. Leg off just above the knee. James always wore a Hat when out and about, James loved Pigeon's and Greyhounds. He had a Pigeon Loft in the closed in yard behind the Shop. He use to race the Pigeons and one year won the Nants France race, his was the only Pigeon that came home. He was offered £1000.00 for it, but refused. The next day he found the bird dead in the Loft. It had died of a broken Heart, they reckon too much stress. He called the Bird "Home Alone" and had framed photos of the pigeon. Later he was really into rearing Canaries, when he came home from a day at the Shop, he would spend hours watching them, and taking care of them. his wife Maisie said she should have had Feathers, as he loved his birds so much !!.
He kept his Greyhounds at home in Kells. One day one of the chickens put its head through the wire fence and the greyhound bit its head off !

KINHILT STREET 4177
Imagine waking up to this well this is what the house and business owners in Kinhilt Street in Ballymena had to deal with in 1956 and they're not being helped by that lorry going past creating waves to push more water into the buildings.
