It's 5.30pm and the Harland shipyard workers are heading home sny way they
can, what I want to know is how did the conductor collect their fares? The

HAZELWOOD 4540
Here we are on the Antrim road back in 1950, we are looking at the entrance
to Hazelwood and the people queued up are waiting aon a single green decker
bus which would to take you up the hill where you could go the amusements
or the Zoo. Now when I was there, if nobody was going back down he would let
me get on and go really fast down hill as it was very zig-zag.
HIGH STREET 4542
It's 1930 and here we we are in High Street with a policeman directing the
traffic and coming towards him is a tram while behind it is the Albert Memorial
Clock. To the right is a building everyone knew so well Woolworths, In the
late 1950's when I was 15 in other branch of Woolworths in Upper North Street
everything was priced at 6 old pennies and I bought my first Camera 6d, Flash
Gun 6d and a packet of blue coloured Flash Bulbs 6d. In this one I used to
go in here to get my lunch at the cafe and you could buy the latest hit songs
on 33, 45 and 78 records the only downside was they were sung by unknown singers
but you still sing along with the latest.
HERCULES PLACE 4541
This photograph taken in 1879 is history in the making for this is the birth
of Royal Avenue for this is Hercules Place looking towards Hercules Street.
The reason the buildings here and in Hercules Street is to widen the street
so it would become Royal Avenue also being pulled down, for it was used by
butchers is Hercules Lane and the locals were so glad. For the problem was
the butchers didn't have a Abattoir nearby so they had to slaughter the livestock
themselves, this caused a terrible stench and blood everwhere. The first building
on the left is the Bank Buildings which was later rebuilt in 1901 to become
the Bank Buildins which is now Primark. The next building is the old Provinical
Bank of Ireland then becoming Tescos.
HAZELWOOD 4539
Here we are at Hazelwood Amusement Park which was halfway up the hillside
from the Antrim Road which is where the houses are on the left back in 1938.
Atthe top right of the photo you can see the Floral Hall whic leads across
to Bellevue.and the zoo. In the foreground is the small train engine with
the driver ready to st off pulling 6 carriages while further on a couple are
sitting waiting to see it go past them. Behind the train is the Ferris Wheel
which must have given the people on board a great view over the area. There
were plently of amusements for everyone and also a cafe to have a rest and
a cup of tea and what ever was on the menu.

HIGH STREET 4548
Here situated between Boundary Street and Dover Street on the Shankill Road
back in 1920 is Samuel Hogg's business as you can see he is using two shops.
The two men on the right I would say would collect the the goods needed, also
the slaughtered pigs and also the best of English & Scotch Coal which
you could get from the coal boat or from their own yard. The four other men
i would say are shop assistants with Samuel in the background and look at
the prices a whole side of Ribs for six old pence.
HILLMAN STREET 4547
This is Hillman Street back in 1988 while the little girl in the buggy is
watching what the photographer is doing. The girl is playing ball against
the wall and you see the ball in the air with another person doing handstands
and in the distance Gallaher's tobacco factory.
HIGH STREET 4546
It's nearly 5 minutes to one in the afternoon here in High Street back in
1906 and as you can see the street is very busy. In the left hand side is
a Policeman who is directing the traffic but at the moment he is looking at
his watch, probable getting hungry or nearing the end of his shift. Beside
him is a horse & cab with Cabbie patiently waiting for the two ladies
to move out of his way so he could get going to his next job. Stopped at the
kerbside were two horses and sidecars, the passengers must be shopping so
the drivers have put the feed bags over the horses heads so they could have
something to eat while they waited. On the other side of the road you can
see it has recently been swept.
HIGH STREET 4545
This is high Street just on the corner of Skipper Street back in 1906 but
sadly the following year 1907 the Shamrock House which sold all types of Irish
souvenirs postcards. In the shop doorway is a man holding a bicycle. While
on the right the building was run by a W. Jeffrey a high class saddler.
HIGH STREET 4544
We are looking down onto High Street back in 1932 and on the left is a car
parked where the driver has a lot of places they could viisit. At the far
right is Johnston Umbrellas Ltd., above them is "Blackthorn House,"
Wholesale and Retail Umbrella and Walkingstick Manufacturers. Now Johnston's
had another place in Ann Street where they repaired your umbrella for you,
next is an entry which took you to Ann Street Joy's Entry. Then we have.Millett's
Stores which sold a wide range of army surplus clothing and equipment.Up above
them are the offices of the Ulster Sports Club, Greenhill Bros. Ltd., colliery
& shipping agents, coal and coke merchants, Little, A. & J., House
and Land Agent. At street level we have St Georges Hall and Masonic rooms.
At number 35 we have a confectioner and restaurant which served Teas and Luncheons
and was owned by A Miss Boyd. Up above you then had J. J. Kennedy, stock broker
and Gregg, W., the caretaker. Finally at 39. W. J. Marshall, who was an Outfitter
and Tailor.

The greatest day on Earth, 8th May 1945 it's VE Day the end of World War II
and these men are selling flags ect to celebrate with. Across the street is
a well known store Wellworths
